Meltrex®: View into pilot plant

From Process Technology To Drug Delivery Systems

The melt extrusion (Meltrex) process, well-established in chemical engineering, has been adapted to the manufacture of pharmaceutical formulations in a single, continuous process. The active ingredients are mixed with, or in some cases dissolved in, the pharmaceutical polymer together with excipients if required and then extruded and shaped as tablets, granules, pellets, sheets, sticks or powder. The resulting tablets can have an innovative appearance, providing additional product protection, and the intermediates (e.g. granules, powder) can be further processed into conventional tablets.

We have invested in laboratory-scale equipment for feasibility studies, pilot plant for clinical trials, etc. and full-scale production facilities, currently manufacturing products approved by FDA and EU. Meltrex technology lends itself to accurate monitoring, feedback and provison of documentation meeting GMP requirements.

Extruder

The melt extrusion process consists of an extruder and a shaping device - e.g. a calender. The extruder processes the drug together with a thermoplastic polymer and additional ingredients continuously, to produce a molten mass containing the drug. Subsequently the shaping device forms tablets, granules or pellets.
